Winamac Town Council Votes To Update Golf Cart Registration Policies

Winamac golf cart users will soon have to register their vehicles more frequently. The town council voted Monday to switch to a yearly registration system, rather than every two years.

The annual fee will be $25, and the color of the registration sticker will change every year, to make it easier to tell which are current. Registrations will be non-transferable. That means that if a golf cart is sold, the registration will not go with it, and the new owner will have to pay the registration fee.

One thing that will not change is the town’s ban on children under 48 pounds from riding in golf carts. A petition calling for an amendment to the policy was presented to the town council last month, but council members opted to leave it as it is.

Council President Tom Murray also noted that golf cart users must show proof of insurance and that three-wheel golf carts are not allowed. Council members plan to formally update the the town’s golf cart ordinance next month to reflect the changes. If approved, the changes would take effect in January.
