The Koontz Lake Conservancy District members are looking to improve conditions in Koontz Lake.
Representative Matt Wolfe told the Starke County Commissioners last week that they are looking into watershed management by controlling water runoff from farmland, golf courses and residences into the lake. This will help curb the weeds and algae that are killing native plants in the lake. District members will discuss ditch maintenance with County Surveyor Bill Crase.
Wolfe also mentioned that the district members are also looking into the purchase of a complete aeration system that includes three generators to power 20 aerators which will increase oxygenation in the lake and regulate muck and harmful algae. The aeration lines will be installed underground. The compressors, which have the same noise pollution as an air conditioner, will only be operational from April to November, according to Wolfe.
The commissioners asked Wolfe to provide them and County Attorney Marty Lucas with Koontz Lake Conservancy District’s plans for clean up, placement of the compressors, along with expense responsibilities, all other documents, and pictures. The commissioners support the idea and will discuss it further during their next meeting on Monday, Dec. 4.
