Pulaski County is expected to complete over $1 million in road projects with money from the second round of Community Crossings grants. But Highway Superintendent Terry Ruff still hasn’t revealed which roads will be getting an upgrade. He says the work won’t be able to start until the spring, and he wants to wait until closer to that time before releasing details.
However, Starke and Marshall counties, as well as most cities and towns, have already discussed what they plan to do with their Community Crossings money. For example, in Starke County, grant funds are helping to pay for a few bridge replacements, as well as the resurfacing of County Road 300 East from State Road 8 to the Knox Industrial Park.
Ruff says no bridge replacements are planned as part of Pulaski County’s 2017 Community Crossings projects. He says that a couple projects are in the works, and certain roads will be paved in six-mile sections. But Ruff declined to specify where exactly that work will take place.
Pulaski County was awarded nearly $879,000 in state funding, as part of this year’s Community Crossings grant. That’s far more than other local governments. For comparison, Starke County got less than $571,000, while Marshall County got just over $518,000.
For now, Ruff says the Pulaski County Highway Department is still working on getting the projects bidded out. The county still has plenty of time to do that, though. The paperwork doesn’t have to be turned in to the state until April 15.
At the same time, Pulaski County is still working on projects from last year’s round of grant funding. Ruff says the rehabilitation of the bridge on 700 North over Bogus Run was included as part of the 2016 Community Crossings cycle. Bids for the work are scheduled to be opened during the county commissioners’ November 20 meeting. Construction is expected to start in the spring.
