Parking Lot Upgrades Planned for Oregon Township Voting Site

The Starke County Election Board members are moving the voting site for Oregon Township Precinct 2 voters from the Koontz Lake Fire Department to the Koontz Lake Association Building. In order for that to happen, a few upgrades need to be done.

Clerk Vicki Cooley told the Starke County Commissioners this week that in order for that location to meet ADA standards the parking lot needs to be repaved. Starke County Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler gave the election board an estimate for material and the quote was reviewed by members of the Koontz Lake Association. The association members voted to repave the entire parking lot to meet the requirements needed. To pave the east and north sides of the building, the cost is $4,690.

Since the site would be used as a county polling site, the commissioners unanimously voted to donate the labor and equipment toward the cost of the project if the Koontz Lake Association board will pay for the materials. County Attorney Marty Lucas said a simple contract could be drawn up to be approved by both parties to designate that location as a polling site for a certain number of years.
