The Knox Planning Commission members held a lengthy discussion over accessory buildings when they met Tuesday night.
Commission Vice President John Wilson said he found a definition for accessory buildings, stating that they are essentially any outdoor structure that is detached. He said none of the definitions he found specified whether or not they are considered permanent or non-permanent structures.
Wilson also provided specific definitions for carports, lean-tos and canopies for the commission members to consider.
The consensus is that these types of structures are permitted but they are subject to specific setback requirements. Members also agreed that they should not be allowed in front yards.
This brought up the question of individuals with corner lots, since a structure placed in the back or side yard of one of those could still be visible. Planning Administrator Kenny Pfost said he couldn’t find any particular rule currently on the books.
Members also considered adding specific language that deals with tents and other non-permanent structures. They proposed putting in a stipulation that limits such temporary structures to 6 month periods with a non-renewable status.
Members voted to have Planning Administrator Pfost draw up a rough draft with the suggested descriptions and language changes. He will bring that draft to the March Planning Commission meeting where it will be discussed further.
