Knox School Board Approves Sale of 1,000 Student Laptops

The Knox Community School Corporation stands to make at least $265,000 by selling unneeded student laptops. With the school corporation getting new Chrome Books over the summer, the school board decided last week to sell 1,000 MacBook Air devices.

Director of Technology Jim Landrum said administrators wanted to get the best possible deal on the old computers. “$265 a device is what they’re guaranteeing us as a minimum for 1,000 devices,” he explained. “If the devices come back, after they look at them and appraise them, in their system, a little bit higher than that, then they’ll give us the difference, but nothing below $265,000. And that money will be used, pretty much, to pay off the Apple lease, so that we’ll move forward in a lot better shape with the next devices.”

Landrum said the buyer will pick up the MacBooks in June, after students are done with them. The school corporation plans to keep 100 of the devices, for situations where the Chrome Books wouldn’t work as well.

Update: Knox Schools Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart tells WKVI News that he’s received additional offers for the laptops since the sale was finalized last week. He stresses that the computers are not available for public purchase.
