The 2018 employee handbook ordinance was up for adoption at the Winamac Town Council meeting Monday night.
At a meeting in March, council members found some inconsistencies with the document so they decided to send it back to the company New Focus for amendments before considering it for adoption. The inconsistency they discovered was related to grievance procedures.
The handbook stated that if an employee has an issue, they would first consult the town manager for a potential solution. If the person happens to be unsatisfied with the solution, the handbook indicated they could seek out a second opinion.
That is where the inconsistency was found; one section of the handbook instructed employees to consult with the town council president while another part said the ultimate decision would be up to the town council as a whole. Members decided they wanted to change the langue in the handbook to list the town council as the second contact for grievances.
When members met this week, Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger informed them that the change was made. Members then unanimously adopted the ordinance as presented.
