Donations are still be collected for the Winamac Fireworks Display, as officials are still more than $2,800 away from their goal with the June deadline approaching.
Additionally, officials with the Town of Winamac are reassessing fireworks display plans, after the distributor alerted Town Manager Brad Zellers that the park will not be an acceptable location.
At a previous meeting, members decided to move the location of the fireworks display to the park since debris from the fireworks blew over onto a neighboring car dealership when the event was when they held it at the school last year.
However, during Monday night’s town council meeting, Zellers informed members that due to certain liability restrictions, the display cannot be held at the park.
After speaking with the distributor, Zellers said they came to the conclusion that holding the event at the baseball diamond on the school’s campus would provide enough additional space to help keep the same debris issue from occurring again. Zellers said he would contact school officials to see if that is an acceptable possibility.
He told members that he needs to secure a location as soon as possible to give the fireworks company enough time to get the necessary permits and put the Town of Winamac on their schedule.
He added that the $5,500 goal needs to be reached so officials will know that the cost of the display will be covered before they finalize anything with the company.
Residents and business owners can still make donations at the Winamac Clerk-Treasurer’s Office at 120 West Main Street. If you have any questions, call 574- 946-3451.
