Eastern Pulaski School Board Votes to Keep High School Canopy

Winamac High School will keep its entrance canopy. The Eastern Pulaski School Board voted five-to-two Monday to refurbish the structure for a total cost of nearly $7,000. That’s less than a third of what it would cost to tear it down.

As part of the project, Beach Painting will power wash and add two coats of paint. Meanwhile, the canopy’s current lights will be replaced with LED lighting. The light fixtures will be purchased from All-Phase Electric Supply Company, and school corporation employees will install them.

The school corporation also received two demolition quotes, along with one informal estimate. The lowest was for $22,000.

After looking at the numbers, board member Mike Tetzloff felt that it would be worth salvaging the canopy and making the improvements. However, board members Terri Johnston and Beth Ruff voted against the project. Johnston said she’d like to see the canopy demolished, while Ruff expressed concern about ongoing maintenance costs.
