Tax Professionals Target of New Email Scam

Scammers are once again targeting tax professionals to try to steal their clients’ data.

The Indiana Department of Revenue is warning tax professionals of an email scam. It asks recipients to give their email usernames and passwords, in order to view a message from a tax organization. The message says it’s a “secure information sharing portal,” but state officials say it’s actually a scam that seeks to give criminals access to client information.

The Department of Revenue says to beware of any message asking for personal information and never open links or attachments in suspicious emails. Officials say that phishing emails can often be recognized by misspellings and incorrect grammar. They also suggest checking the return email address.

Tax professionals who receive suspicious emails are encouraged to report them to the Indiana Department of Revenue at investigations@dor.in.gov or to the IRS at phishing@irs.gov.
