The West Central School Corporation qualified for hand-held metal detectors for use within the corporation.
Superintendent Don Street said the state made them available to schools and the school corporation will receive three of the devices.
“The metal detectors will be used on occasions when there is reasonable suspicion,” explained Street. “Individuals have to be trained in the proper use of these hand-held metal detectors. Our school board approved the Indiana School Boards Association recommendation on those.”
Street added that there is still a lot of discussion going on at the state level concerning the proper use of the metal detectors. Police and law enforcement will be able to use them if necessary.
Officials with Indiana Department of Administration were to order the first batch of metal detectors in mid-July, for delivery by mid-August.
