Pulaski County Council to Adopt 2019 Budget, Consider Tax Abatement Request

The Pulaski County Council is scheduled to adopt the county’s 2019 budget tonight, but a number of issues still have to be addressed. Assessor Holly VanDerAa has been calling for a tax increase to make up a shortfall in the county’s Reassessment budget. She says the change would reduce the need for various costs to be paid out of the county’s General Fund.

Meanwhile, Building Inspector Doug Hoover is asking for funding to bring his assistant up to full-time status, citing an increase in his department’s workload. The change is also part of a plan from Hoover and Director of Environmental Health Terri Hansen to implement a rental property inspection program. They hope it would significantly reduce the number of complaints from renters about their living conditions and serve as a source of revenue. Updates to the county’s salary matrix are also being planned.

In other business tonight, council members will hold a public hearing on a tax abatement request for a light manufacturing business that’s moving into the old Anvil & Saw property on County Road 200 South. Council members took the first step in the process back in August by adopting a preliminary resolution designating the site an economic revitalization area. A final decision on the request is expected after the hearing.

Tonight’s Pulaski County Council meeting starts at 7:00 EDT at the Pulaski County Highway Garage, following a joint session with the county commissioners at 6:00.
