UPDATED: The Starke County Emergency Management Agency Offers Free Weather Alert Radios

UPDATE: As of 10 a.m. CST the EMA Office had distributed all available radios. If you’re interested in obtaining one elsewhere, visit the official website for the NOAA Weather Radios.

To help the community be better prepared for severe weather events the Starke County Emergency Management Agency is offering free weather alert radios.

EMA Director J. Nier explained that she can program the radios to pick up information from surrounding counties as well so Starke County residents would know what’s coming their way and they’d have even more time to prepare.

She said the radios were supplied by the Department of Homeland Security and she has only 30 of them and they will be supplied on a first come, first served basis.

FEMA representatives say that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radios are as essential as smoke detectors. They report that the radio supplies instant access to the same weather reports and information utilized by meteorologists and emergency personnel.

National Weather Service officials say that in addition to weather messages, the NOAA Radios can transmit warnings of terrorist strikes, nuclear accidents, toxic chemical spills and 911 outages.
