UPDATED: The Starke County Emergency Management Agency Offers Free Weather Alert Radios

UPDATE: As of 10 a.m. CST the EMA Office had distributed all available radios. If you’re interested in obtaining one elsewhere, visit the official website for the NOAA Weather Radios.

To help the community be better prepared for severe weather events the Starke County Emergency Management Agency is offering free weather alert radios.

EMA Director J. Nier explained that she can program the radios to pick up information from surrounding counties as well so Starke County residents would know what’s coming their way and they’d have even more time to prepare. Continue reading

Local Leaders and Volunteers Encouraged to Join Starke County COAD

If you’re looking for a way to get more involved in your community, you should consider joining the Starke County COAD.

The group will be meeting this coming week on Tuesday, August 7th in order to coordinate more about local efforts.

Starke County COAD, or Community Organizations Active in Disaster, aims to encourage collaboration among local residents and officials in order to strengthen the community to be better prepared for disaster response and recovery. Continue reading

Local Emergency Planning Committee to Hold Make-Up Meeting Today

Members of Starke County’s Local Emergency Planning Committee will meet this afternoon to discuss details surrounding a recent hazardous material incident and how it was handled successfully.

The LEPC will meet at 2 p.m. in the lower floor of the Starke County Annex Building #2 (the old jail) in the Purdue Extension Office meeting room.

The members were scheduled to hold their meeting last week but there were not enough members there to have a quorum so the meeting was rescheduled. Continue reading

The Public is Welcome to Join Tonight’s Meeting of the Starke County Organizations Active in Disaster

Members of the Starke County Organizations Active in Disaster or COAD will meet tonight at 5:30 p.m. CT.

Facilitated by Starke County EMA Director J. Nier, members of this organization are working to develop a local network of individuals who will be ready to act when a disaster strikes.

The group met for the first time back in April, where some government officials, church leaders, members of the medical community and other concerned citizens discussed the areas that need improvement when it comes to disaster response in the county. Continue reading
