A driver on the Indiana Toll Road narrowly escaped serious injuries Tuesday evening after a pumpkin was thrown from an overpass in La Porte County onto the interstate below, according to an Indiana State Police press release.

ISP Dispatch received a call around 9:35 p.m. and the caller reported that a pumpkin had been thrown from an overpass and came through the windshield of a passing vehicle, causing it to crash into a nearby ditch.

A preliminary investigation conducted by Trooper Trent Jones revealed that 64-year-old Susan Brown of Edwardsburg, MI was driving her 2018 Chevrolet eastbound on the Indiana Toll Road near the 44 mile marker when an object, later determined to be a pumpkin, crashed through the windshield on the driver’s side, striking her and causing her to crash into a ditch. Brown reportedly suffered minor injuries.

It was determined that the pumpkin was apparently thrown from the North Goldring Road overpass, which is approximately five miles east of the Michigan City exit.

Police say this is the second report of this same type of incident that occurred at this location and the third in this area since November 7th. All three incidents happened between 8:44 p.m. and midnight.

Authorities have issued an important reminder that throwing objects from an overpass can cause injuries as well as death. Police add that anyone caught committing this crime can be charged with the misdemeanor of criminal mischief or, if the victim sustains injuries, they can face a felony charge of overpass mischief.
