Knox Police Chief Asks City Council to Review No Parking Fine

Knox Police Chief Harold Smith asked city council members to review the city’s no parking fines when members met Tuesday night.

Chief Smith mentioned that the fine is currently set at $5 and that doesn’t seem to dissuade people from parking in prohibited areas.

He said they have problems in multiple spots around the city but there is a consistent issue with people parking across the street from the school despite signs that say no parking.

Mayor Dennis Estok noted that improper parking also causes problems when the street department has to do street sweeping or snow plowing.

Council President Ron Parker candidly mentioned that $25 would likely get people’s attention and also proposed the possibility of having a second offense fine of $50.

No official actions were taken but the matter will be readdressed during future meetings.
