Indiana Attorney General Warns of Equifax Settlement Phishing Scams

Those looking to file a claim in the Equifax data breach settlement are being warned not to inadvertently compromise their data again.

People whose information was exposed in the data breach can file a claim at But scammers have set up websites with similar addresses, according to Indiana Attorney General Curtis Hill. For example, the words “breach” or “settlement” may be misspelled.

The Attorney General’s office says those sites may be phishing scams to get people to reveal their credit card numbers or other personal data. Hill says anyone seeking to file claims “must absolutely make certain they are on the correct site.” He recommends verifying the proper website address from a trusted source like the Federal Trade Commission.

Anyone who thinks they may have been scammed is asked to report it to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division by calling 1-800-382-5516 or online at
