Winamac to Collect Unpaid Debts by Intercepting State Income Tax Refunds

Those in debt to the Town of Winamac may now have that money taken out of their state income tax refunds.

The town council Monday finalized a memorandum of understanding to take part in the Tax Refund and Exchange Compliance System.

The way it works is that the town will put together a list of those with unpaid bills, which is then compared to the list of people set to get an income tax refund.

Municipalities don’t have to pay to take part in the program. Their only expense is the cost of sending the notification letters. Instead, the person who owes the money is charged a fee.

Pulaski County and Knox both signed on to the program last year.
