North Judson Officials Request Forgiveness of Election Bill

Two members of the North Judson Town Council asked the Starke County Council members to forgive a bill sent by the Clerk’s Office for costs for the 2019 Municipal General Election.

Town Council Vice President Josh Brown and Council member Jane Ellen Felchuk commented that there was not forewarning of a cost of $10,917.95 for the election in order to budget it in the 2019 budget.  They indicated that the extra cost is not in the budget.

There were two contested races found during the August filing and a General Election was needed.  Starke County Clerk Bernadette Welter Manuel said she is to bill for elections per IC code.  There wouldn’t be a cost if the town council chooses to move the election to a Presidential Election year or Mid-Term Election year with staggered terms.

The council members did forgive the bill for the City of Knox in the middle of 2019 as city officials came before the council with the same complaint of the lack of knowledge to budget the cost.

The council members agreed to forgive the bill for the Town of North Judson which was put into a motion and unanimously approved.
