Updating Pulaski County’s computers will be a much bigger project than initially thought.
Earlier this month, Auditor Laura Wheeler told the county commissioners that 11 to 15 computers were still using Windows 7, which is being discontinued. This week, she said that number is actually closer to 45, and she still hadn’t heard from all of the departments.
The commissioners had agreed to let DeGroot Technology upgrade the original list of computers to Windows 10 at a cost of $150 apiece. Commissioner Kenny Becker said Tuesday that he gave emergency approval last week to update another nine computers for Circuit Court, due to the security concerns with keeping Windows 7.
The rest of the commissioners approved Becker’s recommendation to cover the cost of updating all of the Windows 7 computers out of the county’s IT budget with the help of a provider of computer repair services in Star. “They had that in there for an IT director but we’ve got to get the money from someplace to pay that, and it has to be done because there’s no security on them computers,” Becker said.
This comes as Pulaski County is already anticipating thousands of dollars in IT expenditures in the near future. Roeing IT Solutions is doing an $11,000 analysis of the county’s technology, with the expectation that the company will recommend several equipment upgrades.
