Visitors to the Pulaski County Courthouse may soon have to pass by a security guard. Starting next month, all visitors will have to use the basement entrance on the west side of the building. Maintenance Director Mia Salyers asked the county commissioners Tuesday about posting a guard at the new single point of entry.
Commissioner Jerry Locke voiced his support for the idea. “My personal opinion: now’s the time to move on with security because with the repairs of the courthouse, the Justice Center, they’re saying a year to a year-and-a-half. I don’t think it’d be done that quick, personally,” Locke said.
Sheriff Jeff Richwine has discussed sharing officers with the jail, but he said that would still require additional staff. He plans to visit this week with Cass County Courthouse security officials, to see how they handle staffing.
In the end, the commissioners agreed to support taking a request to the county council to add a new security position. Even though the guard would be part of the Sheriff’s Office, the commissioners suggested that Salyers should also be part of the conversation, to share her plans for the single point of entry.
