Culver Town Council Approves Salary Ordinance Amendment

The Culver Town Council members approved a salary ordinance amendment during their meeting Tuesday night.

With two police officers leaving the Culver Police Department for other employment and one set to go to training at the Police Academy, there are only two officers to oversee public safety until new officers can be hired.  The salary ordinance addresses paying those officers for time worked during this difficult situation.

In the proposed ordinance amendment, Town Marshal Wayne Bean would be changed from a salaried employee to an hourly employee at a rate of $27.47 and must reach 84 hours in a two-week pay period before receiving a stipend based on an overtime rate at time-and-a-half of the hourly rate.

It also states that a part-time deputy would be paid in a range of $20.00 to $23.00 per hour.

It would be retroactive to the Feb. 16 pay period and expire on June 7, unless extended by the town council.  It would revert to the original language after the time period.

The salary ordinance amendment passed on second and third readings Tuesday night with a unanimous vote by the council.

Bean did tell the town council members that he’s received several applications for the two open spots on the police force.  The application deadline is Friday, March 13.
