West Central School Board Approves Sixth Grade Transition

The West Central School Board members took action on a concept of transitioning the sixth grade students from the Middle/High School back to the Elementary School.

Past discussion touched on the maturity level of students at that level and the difference in disciplinary measures between the two schools.

Elementary School Principal Mike Carlson said the transition might be a little difficult to begin with, but there is enough room at the Elementary School to accommodate the change.   Carlson said he’s not heard much commentary on the matter, but the office staff has concerns about the extra impact on administrators there.

As far as student reaction, Carlson said he’s heard comments about some students being disappointed about not moving up to a different school, but for the most part the students haven’t said much about it.

The board members approved the reorganization with a unanimous vote. The change will begin with the 2020-2021 school year.
