Winamac Town Park upgrades continue to move ahead. During Thursday’s park board meeting, Board Secretary Kim Burke said that the new toddler playground equipment has been ordered.
The quote the town received from AAA State of Play is now almost two years old, but Burke said that in the end, the company was able to keep the cost the same at just under $54,000. However, the cost of permanent cornhole courts went up by about $130.
Meanwhile, the old park restrooms have been torn down, and Park Board President Jon Chapman reported that the contractor plans to be onsite to get to work on the new ones in about two weeks.
The entire project will be funded, in part, by a Land and Water Conservation Fund matching grant distributed by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Several organizations have contributed funding for the toddler playground, including the American Legion and Kiwanis Club.
The Winamac Eagles had previously donated $4,000 toward the effort in memory of Steve Girton. The park board accepted another $500 from the organization Thursday. In return, board members agreed to designate a new bench that’s part of the project in Girton’s memory.
The project also includes frisbee golf equipment and new basketball backboards. It’s taken years for everything to come together, mainly due to delays with the federal grant funding.
