Pulaski County to Require Use of Face Masks in Public

Pulaski County Commissioners: Mike McClure, Jerry Locke, Kenny Becker

Pulaski County will require the use of face masks in public starting Friday. During an emergency meeting Thursday, the county commissioners approved an order requiring individuals to cover their nose and mouth when visiting businesses and public buildings. The requirement won’t apply to private homes or outdoors, according to County Attorney Kevin Tankersley.

Those violating the order could be charged with a Class B misdemeanor, but Tankersley noted that police officers and the prosecutor have some discretion when it comes to enforcement. The order will remain in effect until further notice.

Tankersley noted that the commissioners also have the authority to impose additional restrictions, such as occupancy limits and square footage requirements. The face mask requirement was selected because county officials felt it would have the biggest impact and was the most enforceable.

The order comes as Pulaski County has seen a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases, and neighboring Cass County is dealing with the effects of an outbreak at a Logansport meatpacking plant. Commissioner Jerry Locke felt that if the order could potentially save one life, it’ll be worth it.

The commissioners also agreed to extend the temporary workforce reduction policy through May 18 at 11:59 p.m. It allows certain “non-essential” Pulaski County employees to stay home while still getting paid their regular rate.
