The Town of Winamac is waiving late fees on utility bills for April and May. The change was approved by the town council Monday. Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger said that utilities won’t be shut off during the COVID-19 emergency, but some places have been looking into waiving penalties, as well.
Council Member Judy Heater thought it was a good idea. “Since we’re going ahead and doing everything as usual and paying our people and everything, I think it would be a good gesture if we gave our customers a break because maybe some of them can’t pay because they are laid off,” she said.
Berger said an ordinance will have to be approved officially amending Winamac’s rate schedule, to provide clarity to the State Board of Accounts.
Council members also agreed to keep town employees on their modified work schedule until further notice.
