Pulaski County EMS, Arens Field to Get CARES Act Funding

The Pulaski County government is getting its share of federal COVID-19 response funding. The county commissioners Monday agreed to let the EMS department accept a funding distribution from the CARES Act.

Commissioner Kenny Becker said the payment will total about $18,000. “But it’s only used for the coronavirus,” he explained. “What they do not use, they have to send back.”

Last month, Board of Aviation Commissioners President Jeremy Wegner told the county commissioners that they were expecting $20,000 in CARES Act funding for Arens Field.

Pulaski County continues to see an increasing number of COVID-19 cases, and the commissioners have ordered the use of face masks in businesses and public buildings. Becker said that the county isn’t planning any changes to its local policies, even as the state eases restrictions. That means restaurants will be able to open at 50-percent capacity starting Monday. “I guess we ask the people to use your own judgment of going in and how you’re going to interact in there,” Becker said Monday. “The servers and your cooks will still have to wear the masks. We know you can’t eat with a mask, but please, use your best judgment when you’re going into places like that.”

County officials had previously discussed the possibility of keeping some restrictions in place locally, as the rest of the state eases them. In neighboring Cass County, the governor is not letting restaurants open for dine-in service until May 25, due to the COVID-19 outbreak there.
