A Black Lives Matter: Culver Focused on Education demonstration event is proposed at the Culver Town Park sometime in July.
Evan Dutmer, a Latin teacher at Culver Academies, explained to the Culver Town Council members last week that he hopes that it is a teaching moment for the community.
“We’re hoping it will be a community dialoguing session,” said Dutmer. “It’s born out of feedback we’ve received from students, faculty and community members – just a hope to be able to gather together to show solidarity, and show of support for especially our students of color during a really, really difficult time.”
Dutmer will be working more with the Culture Competence and Equity Committee to find a date to host the event. It was initially proposed for June 12, but the Culver Town Council members stated they wanted more time to review the request, amid health and safety concerns surrounding COVID-19.
The council members also want to be sure that protocols and guidelines are being followed as recommended by the Health Department and the Governor’s Office.
The council members did approve a motion to support the event request, pending more discussion with event organizers, Park Superintendent Amber Cowell and Town Manager Jonathan Leist.
