The new sidewalk leading to the Hamlet Town Park is now open. The sidewalk portion of the town’s Division Street project is complete, according to Park Board President Dave Kesvormas.
“It does look good,” Kesvormas said during Wednesday’s park board meeting. “A lot of people were surprised at how good it looks. I had a handful of people say how come we didn’t go all the way north. We’re going to have that flip-flop, you know?”
Town officials said it’s already getting some use. Street Superintendent Kevin Leinbach expects the paving portion of the project to begin in about three weeks. Division Street will be resurfaced from Railroad to Terry streets.
The new sidewalk will tie in with the planned Robert J. Tauteris Jr. Memorial Walkway at the park. Kesvormas said he still needed to get a final cost from the Hamlet American Legion, which has been helping to organize and raise some of the money for the effort. “We’ve got the drawing,” Kesvormas said. “We just need to put the numbers to the drawing and see exactly where we’re at and what we’re going to need.”
Board Member Brian Earnest said if the walkway has to be split up into phases, he’d like the sections that will connect to the new sidewalk to be completed first.
