Starke County Council Reviews Additional Appropriation for North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library

The Starke County Council members want more information before approving an additional appropriation request from the North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library.

Library Director Kelsie Purcell explained that the contractor who performed recent improvement work at the library did not complete the project with a positive result.  She said in order to fix a water issue the windows will need to be removed.  It is apparently worse than what it was prior to the project.

The additional appropriation request of $50,000 would include the removal of the windows and some wall repairs to fix the problem.  The contractor who initially did the improvement work offered a discount to fix the problem.

Council President Dave Pearman had an issue with the same contractor doing the work since it wasn’t done to the standards that a government entity would expect.  He asked if there was a claim against the bond and what other measures were taken.

Pearman requested that the original contract for the project be reviewed by the county attorney and other documents to see how this can come to a positive resolution.  The documents will be provided at the council’s next meeting.

The council voted unanimously to table the request until the July 20 meeting at 5:30 p.m.

Additionally, the council will look over an agreement concerning a non-binding review of the library’s budget by the county council at the next meeting.
