Five Starke County charitable groups were recently awarded a share of $5,000, in this year’s round of grants from The Hive Ladies’ Giving Circle.
Toyz for Kids got $1,500 to help with its annual distribution of turkeys and fruit to families in need in December. $1,250 is going to the Starke County Youth Club to help support its virtual summer programs. The Ken Craig Community Garden was awarded $1,000 to add more raised beds for the vegetable garden and install benches in the pollinator garden.
Additionally, the North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department Auxiliary is getting $750 toward its efforts to buy an inflatable fire education house, and the Bass Lake Lions Club got $500 to help it give dictionaries to every third grader at Knox and North Judson-San Pierre. Due to COVID-19, finalists discussed their projects and the winners were announced in videos on The Hive’s Facebook page.
The Hive is a ladies’ giving circle established through the Starke County Community Foundation. Membership dues are pooled together, and members vote on how to allocate grants to a list of finalists.
