Less than two weeks into the school year, the Knox Community School Corporation has reported its first case of COVID-19. Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart says one staff member at the high school is home recovering after testing positive, while two other staff members and seven students who may have been exposed were sent home Monday to quarantine.
“This, obviously, we knew was going to happen at some point during the school year,” Reichhart says. “We hoped it didn’t and we hope it doesn’t in the future, but when it does, we’re going to react positively and our number-one priority is to keep our students and staff safe.”
Reichhart says the school buildings can safely remain open, based on health officials’ guidance. “We’re following the board of health guidelines,” he explains. “Based upon the details of this positive case, their advice to us is that we have taken the appropriate measures, and we have followed their advice 100 percent on this. So I would say at this point, they have not given us any further direction to do anything further.”
Meanwhile, Winamac High School has reportedly canceled all of its athletic events for this week, following a positive test in the Eastern Pulaski Community School Corporation. That includes the football game against Knox High School that had been scheduled for this Friday.
