The Hamlet Zoning Board is moving ahead with the demolition of 503 South Starke Street. Last month, board members agreed to have JD Excavating remove the house for $6,800, unless the owners completed the demolition themselves. That didn’t happen by Wednesday’s deadline, although the owners said they could start work within the next two weeks.
But during Wednesday’s meeting, Board President Dave Kesvormas felt that they had already had enough chances to either repair the building or tear it down. “When we drew the line the first time, it was he had this, he had water, everything was in, and then he stiffed us on paying us for that water pit, which we’re going to add that into the fee, and then, this removal,” Kesvormas said.
Board members agreed to let JD Excavating demolish the house, as planned. Town Attorney Martin Bedrock directed Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts to make sure she has enough time to place a lien on the property before it goes up for tax sale on October 1.
Board members also agreed to issue notices for hearings on unsafe garages at 200 West Davis Street and a lot on Railroad Street to be held on September 23.
