Starke County Sheriff’s Department to Apply for Grant for Hybrid Police Interceptor

A 2021 Ford Hybrid Police Interceptor SUV could soon be part of the vehicle fleet at the Starke County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Bill Dulin talked to the Starke County Council members and the Starke County Commissioners Monday night about the opportunity to apply for a no-match grant for this hybrid vehicle.

South Shore Clean Cities Program Specialist Kyle Lisek informed the government members about the grant from the Indiana Department of Energy Development for $50,000.

Lisek said, “We’re a Department of Energy non-profit.  We help organizations look for ways to save money as well as reduce emissions – mostly fleet vehicles, but governmental agencies in general.  After doing an analysis on Starke County’s current fleet usage, this new vehicle would provide a two-and-a-half year return on investment so after those two-and-a-half years it would be a complete fuel savings as well as emissions reductions.”

The Hybrid Police Interceptor SUV is pursuit rated.

Sheriff Dulin said, if awarded, this hybrid vehicle would replace another vehicle on the fleet.

The grant is due at the end of September. The Starke County Commissioners unanimously approved a motion to allow the sheriff to apply for the grant.
