Knox Man Charged in Officer Involved Shooting on Thanksgiving in La Porte County

A Knox man has been charged in an officer involved shooting that took place on Thanksgiving in La Porte County. 

According to information released by the Indiana State Police, Siad H. Berry II, 42, was charged in the incident with three counts of attempted murder as a Level 1 Felony, two Level 3 Felony counts of aggravated battery, and one Level 5 Felony count of criminal recklessness.  Any additional charges may be determined by the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s Office.

Berry remains in the La Porte County Jail on a $100,000 cash-only bond. 

The incident was reported just after 5 p.m. on November 26 where officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 7,000-8,000 block of County Road 500 West in La Porte County.  According to the Indiana State Police, the officers were immediately met by gunfire by the suspect, now identified as Siad Berry II, with a police vehicle struck by bullets. 

The officers returned fire, striking Berry.  He was later located with a gunshot wound and transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. 

No officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire. 

The investigation was turned over to the Indiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division. 

The officers involved the shooting incident were La Porte County Deputy Evan Doperalski who is a five-year veteran with the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department and La Porte County Deputy Alex B. Pishkur who has served on the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department for four years and in law enforcement for six years. 

Agencies assisting at the scene include the Indiana State Police, La Porte County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan City Police Department, Long Beach Police, Trail Creek Police, Springfield Township Fire Department, and the La Porte County EMS.

Suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
