Leaders are expressing optimism with efforts to get a Main Street designation for Downtown Knox. The committee assembled to pursue the designation met Wednesday with Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs Northwest Community Liaison Gerry White last week.
After outlining the Main Street program and the application process, White said the city has everything in place to be extremely successful. Committee leader Kathy Norem said she’s confident that they’ll be able to put together the application by the March 5 deadline, crediting Mayor Dennis Estok for laying a “very nice foundation.”
The mayor highlighted the downtown revitalization plan completed earlier this year by Ball State University, saying that many merchants may be surprised at how many people come downtown and how much money they spend.
Efforts are now underway to secure letters of support from businesses and local residents. A resolution of support will be up for the city council’s approval tomorrow.
