West Central School Board Approves Make-up Days

West Central School Corporation students will need to make up school days that were missed last month due to events that led to the two-day closure of the school corporation.

A wind storm knocked over a tower in Francesville that provides internet to the school. At the same time, Zylstra said he got notification of a teacher positive COVID-19 case that affected several staff members as close contacts, so the school was closed to in-person learning.  With the internet not functional, virtual learning was not an option, so instruction was canceled for two days for all students.

Superintendent Dan Zylstra said he attempted to get a waiver from the state, but officials informed him that the two days are not eligible for a waiver.

“Because we canceled the whole corporation, we have to use built-in days first,” Zylstra explained.  “If we had only canceled one of the buildings, or at a larger corporation if a tree fell and landed on just one of the buildings and they’d only cancel school, say, at one elementary school, but the rest of the school stays open, then they might grant a waiver for that.” The school board acted last week to unanimously approve February 12 and April 5 as make up days.
