Hamlet American Legion Presents Park Board with More than $5,000 for Tauteris Walkway

Phil Mitchell and Mark Gourley with the Hamlet American Legion present a check for more than $5,000 to the Hamlet Park Board for the construction of the Robert J. Tauteris Jr. Memorial Walkway

The Hamlet American Legion officially presented the money it raised toward the Robert J. Tauteris Jr. Memorial Walkway to the town’s park board Wednesday. “We have a check to the Town of Hamlet for $5,058 on behalf of our Legion and the donations that we worked on and received over the last two years,” Vice Commander Phil Mitchell told board members.

It will be a new, four-foot-wide concrete path encircling the Town Park. Park Board President Dave Kesvormas said he’d like to start work in late February or early March. Town officials plan to meet with the engineer next month to finalize figures.

“That’s kind of where we need to stand to make some decisions, get some folks out to start quoting,” Kesvormas said, “and COVID or no COVID, we’re going to figure out a way to move forward with it this year.”

The park board also plans to contribute about $2,500 using money that was left unspent last year. On top of that, the Legion has some money that an individual has set aside for landscaping and other supplemental work.

The goal is to have the new walkway done in time for the Easter egg hunt and Mother’s Day.
