Winamac Seeking Demolition Bids for Abandoned Grain Elevator

An abandoned grain elevator in Winamac could soon be coming down, as part of a revitalization effort. The town council voted to purchase the property near Logan and Jefferson streets for under $40,000 back in August and officially took ownership last month.

Town Manager Brad Zellers told council members Monday that he’s advertised for demolition bids, and the council will open them on January 25. “If we’ve got a good idea of who will be doing it, we’ll know what the appropriation’s going to be because we have to advertise for an appropriation out of EDIT,” Zellers explained.

He said the council’s regular February meeting will be pushed back a week to February 15, by which time everything should be done.

Town Attorney Justin Schramm reminded any local contractors who may be interested to read the bid specifications carefully and consider the cost of the performance bond. “Every time I deal with projects like these, the contractor throws a fit after they’re awarded the contract because they didn’t figure that into the cost of their bid,” he added.

The town has been looking at turning the property into a recreational area, including a possible splash pad.
