Efforts to get a Main Street designation for Downtown Knox took a major step forward Friday. Knox Main Street United submitted its application to the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.
A Main Street designation would open the door to various grant opportunities, training programs, and other resources to help with downtown revitalization. Designees are expected to be announced by the state by May.
Friday’s application follows months of planning. Knox Main Street United is currently in the process of incorporating as a nonprofit organization. A board of directors has been established, and committees have been created to address the four points of the Main Street approach to revitalization: design, economic vitality, promotion, and organization.
One of the next challenges for the Knox group will be to find an executive director. It will start as a volunteer position, with the goal of eventually making it a paid position in the future.
