Knox Mayor Confident that Summer Events Can Be Held if Residents Get Vaccinated

Knox Mayor Dennis Estok is confident that summer events and programs could make a comeback, but only if residents do their part. “I know there’s people that refuses to get the vaccine and all of that, but if everybody does their part and we get the vaccine, I guarantee you, we can have all of our events,” Estok told the city council Tuesday.

He said fireworks donations from local businesses are looking promising. “I was worried about that, but we are having a very good response,” Estok said. “And actually, all of our vendors, we’ve already started scheduling the vendors and all that, and they’re excited that we’re going to have our events.”

Park shelters are once again available for rent, but city officials still need to figure out how many people to allow for events at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center. “They still want you to follow the CDC guidelines as far as social distancing and all of that, so that’s the tough part about the community center, especially for receptions,” Estok said. “If you have to do that, if we enforce that, you’re going to get, probably, a little over 100 people and that’s about it.”

The mayor said he may still require the use of face masks in city government buildings once the state mandate is eased on April 6, similar to the policy for state buildings.
