Crews from the Starke County Highway Department took advantage of the warmer weather this week to tackle the onset of potholes in the area, which is a common occurrence as Spring approaches.
Potholes are caused by the expansion and contraction of ground water after the water has entered into the ground under the pavement.
Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler said patching has been ongoing this week along with other maintenance following a rather snowy February.
Ritzler said several complaints were filed this season concerning snow removal, while compliments were also gathered at the highway department. Several drivers have less than three years of experience on the roads during snow storms, but are expected to improve as their employment and training continues.
Residents with pothole or roadway concerns can call the highway department during the week at 574-772-3011. A work ticket can be issued and the concern can be assigned for repair.
