Event Organizers Say Bringing Back Summer Festivals Will Require Volunteers, Financial Help

Summer events may be coming back after a year off due to the pandemic, but in order for that to happen, they’ll need some help. Knox Mayor Dennis Estok told the city council last week that things are lining up for the July 3 Family Fun Day, but they’re still trying to round up volunteers. “These events, it’s like starting all over,” he said. “You know, we’ve lost our continuity a little bit.”

He says volunteers are needed to monitor the bounce houses, front gate, and trams. Time slots are available from 2:00 to 10:00 p.m. For more information, call the Mayor’s Office at 574-772-4553.

The city is also looking for volunteers to help organize the Knox Alumni Reunion scheduled for the night before the Family Fun Day. “And it doesn’t have to be the whole class showing up,” Estok added. “If none of your class is going to show up, you can show up.”

A planning meeting is scheduled today at 5:00 p.m. at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center.

Meanwhile, North Judson Mint Festival President Donna Henry says she needs more sponsors and even outright donations, to help get the festival back on track. She told the town council that soft costs alone range from $6,000 to $8,000.

Henry said she thinks people will be ready to get back out in June. “We’re just praying the numbers go down and stay down because if they go up, it’s possible that we would have to, all of a sudden, cancel,” Henry said.

She urged residents to wear masks, social distance, and take whatever COVID-19 precautions they can to keep the community safe and let the Mint Fest continue.
