An opportunity to help youth in the Starke County community is coming up soon.
The Starke County Youth Club will hold its annual Radiothon on K99.3 WKVI Friday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. CT. Starke County Youth Club Executive Director Irene Szakonyi reminded the Starke County Council members Monday night that it’s a time to help donate to a worthy cause by helping the younger generation with necessary homework help, life skills, and social and emotional devices.
“We do that by providing after school, summer, and enrichment programs to kids all across our community,” said Szakonyi. “We do that every day after school, we do it through the summer and we do it during spring break.”
She commented that the Starke County Youth Club is much more than residents may realize when it comes to what the organization can offer.
Szakonyi continued, “I talk about the activities that we do at club because they’re fun like we teach kids to build robots, and we teach kids how to cook. All of that is great. The content is cool and it supports academic achievement. The foundation of all of that is they build a relationship with a staff member at our program and that connection to another human is what makes them feel safe and loved.”
The pandemic not only took a toll on programs of the Youth Club, but revenues took a hit as well. County Council President Dave Pearman asked specifically about that as the county looks at organizations that suffered during the pandemic.
Those wanting to participate in the Radiothon can call 772-6241 on Friday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. CT, or make an online donation that day at www.thescyc.org.
