Suspect, Police Injured in Foot Chase through LaPorte Bakery

Three people were taken to the hospital after a suspect allegedly led police on a foot chase through a LaPorte bakery. Police say it began just before 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, with a traffic stop in the 800 block of Boyd Boulevard, according to a City of LaPorte press release.

Officers say they were handcuffing a suspect, when the individual “began assaulting the officer and managed to break away.” The suspect allegedly fled to the nearby Lewis Bakeries factory, scaled the side of the building, ran across the roof, and then went inside as production was taking place. State and county police were reportedly called in to help.

Police say the suspect was finally taken into custody after 10:00 p.m., but not before a LaPorte City Police officer and LaPorte County Sheriff’s deputy were hurt. Officers say, “The suspect also obtained self-inflicted injuries from trying to escape police.” All three were taken to Northwest Health – LaPorte hospital.

Police say the suspect caused nearly $22,000 in property damage in the factory.
