Now that school is back in session, Knox City Police Chief Harold Smith is asking motorists to be patient during student pick-up and drop-off times during the week.
He is also reminding drivers that it is against the law to disregard an activated stop arm on a school bus.
When approaching a stopped school bus from any direction and it has its red lights flashing and stop arm extended, motorists are required to stop, even on multiple lane highways where there is no barrier or median separating lanes of traffic.
Motorists traveling on a highway divided by a barrier, such as cable barrier, concrete wall, or grassy median, are required to stop only if they are traveling in the same direction as the school bus.
Prepare for increased pedestrian traffic in the morning and afternoon hours, and be aware of children standing along the roadway at a bus stop.
