The Knox Community School Board members officially accepted the resignation of School Resource Officer (SRO) Steve VanDerAa Tuesday night.
Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart commented that conversations held with Knox City Police Chief Harold Smith indicate that another officer may not be available for the rest of the school year.
“The board and I discussed what that meant in terms of finding another SRO,” stated Dr. Reichhart. “I pointed out that Chief Smith said that he is very short staffed right now with his staff at the Knox City Police Department. Obviously, we’d like to have an SRO. We do know that Travis Schieber, our SRO from last year, will be returning in July from his commitment in the military and we’re looking forward to having Travis back with us beginning in the 2022-2023 school year.”
He said any events that occur that would require an SRO will be handled through law enforcement in procedures prior to the hire of an SRO at the school corporation.
He noted that any retired police officers or individuals that may certified as an SRO may apply for the position through the Knox City Police Department. Email Chief Harold Smith at hsmith@cityofknox.net.
