The Starke County Council members took action to make some adjustments to the pay for part-time and full-time truck drivers at the Starke County Highway Department.
The department is currently down five drivers. Council President Dave Pearman said the goal is to raise the pay to attract more quality candidates to apply for the available positions. There is money in the budget to raise the pay, according to Pearman.
Several meetings have been held with Highway Superintendent Dan Dipert who has had a tough time trying to hire drivers at the department.
A $2.00 raise was proposed with a $1.00 raise right away and another $1.00 after an evaluation done by May for part-time and full-time truck drivers. Essentially, the hourly pay range would be $19.19 to $21.22 for full-time drivers. The top range of the pay scale would be achieved following evaluations and certain criteria. The pay range for part-time drivers would be $8.50 to $19.50.
The council members approved the adjusted pay with a unanimous vote.
