The newest vehicle in the North Judson Police Department fleet has arrived. The North Judson Police Department recently purchased a Tesla, the first electric vehicle obtained by the department.
North Judson Clerk-Treasurer Andrew Rowe previously noted that a lot of research was done into the cost and performance of the vehicle before the North Judson Town Council approved the purchase.
North Judson Town Marshal Kelly Fisher told WKVI News that the cost of the Tesla, at around $51,000, is comparable to the cost of a Ford Explorer police SUV. They are still waiting for the light package and other equipment to install on the vehicle.
Fisher explained that the vehicle has an electric charging station at the Police Department. The only routine maintenance that needs to be done is the rotation of tires and brake checks.
When the Tesla is fully charged, it can go about 360 miles. Fisher said it takes about $2.00 in electric to charge it to the full battery, which is a cost savings in fuel to the department’s budget. It takes about three to four hours to fully charge.
The Tesla joins two K9 Durangos and a Dodge Charger on the fleet of vehicles at the North Judson Police Department.
