Knox Mayor Reminds Residents to Maintain Grass, Weeds on Properties

Knox Mayor Dennis Estok asks residents to keep yards looking nice as the rather rainy spring season continues on.

He said an ordinance exists that grass should not grow longer than eight inches on properties in the city, which includes rank vegetation.

Knox Director of Building, Planning and Code Compliance Kenny Pfost said he has given out several enforcement notices, which residents have been responding to so no fines have been imposed.

If residents do not comply within five days of receiving the notice, the City or contractors of the City may enter the property to mitigate the issue with the cost issued to the landowner. The bill may be appealed to the Board of Public Works, but if there is still a dispute, the appeal may be taken to Starke Circuit Court, according to the city’s ordinance.

If the bill goes unpaid, it will go as a lien against property taxes.

In addition to any other penalty, remedy or sanction imposed, any person who violates the ordinance shall be fined $75, and that amount can continue for each day the issue exists.
